How do I trim my baby’s nails without cutting his fingertips?

Most often than not, we are deterred from trimming baby’s nails because of their small little tiny size and the “perceived fragility”. We dare not do it as freely as we want it to be all due to this worry. We know it, because we feel the same way too when we were first “upgraded” ourselves as new mothers some time ago. (Ok, admit, this some time ago is quite some time ago.)

Here we would like to provide some tips that hopefully may help you a little when doing this task:

  • Do this while the baby is sleeping or after a bath when your baby’s nails are at their softest.
  • Make sure you have enough light to see what you’re doing.
  • Press the baby’s finger pad away from the nail to avoid nicking the skin, and keep a firm hold on your baby’s hand as you clip.
  • Cut fingernails along the curve of the finger. Cut toenails straight across. Then use the file to smooth out any rough edges.

If manicuring while the baby is awake, you may want to get someone to help you hold him and keep him from wiggling too much. Or have someone distracts him so he’ll let you hold his hand still for the clipping and filing.

Do remember, don’t bite your baby’s nails into shape, as this run the risk of introducing germs from your mouth into any little cut your baby may have on his finger.

Blue Nail Clipper

Bumble Bee Baby Safe Nail Clipper may come in handy at this point of time. This newly-developed product will reach our stores within this week (first week of March 2010), uses only professional-use stainless steel and it can rotate 360°, allowing you to trim your baby nails or toenails without your wrist locked by changing the rotating blade angle.

It has metal cover with small hole to protect baby nail from metal blade, so that you can more accurately trim baby’s nails and curved clipping edges help avoid painful ingrown nails. It also completes with a file to smoothen & neaten nails after trimming.
